Implementing IEEE 1588


Please note that IEEE 1588-2002 is in the process of being revised and updated. Version 2 of the standard is expected to be available in the spring of 2007. Implementers are urged to become involved in the activities of the p1588 committee that is responsible for the revision and to carefully monitor the work-in-progress documents.

The implementation of this standard is facilitated by building on the experience of others. Implementers of IEEE 1588 are encouraged to submit questions or supply appropriate material for inclusion on this page. The items presented in this section are solely the views of the authors and do not represent official interpretations of the IEEE or NIST. Interpretations of the meaning of a portion of the IEEE-1588 standard: 

Questions concerning the meaning of a portion of the standard can only be resolved by procedures established by the IEEE. Interpretations are issued to explain and clarify the intent of the standard and are not intended to constitute an alteration to the original standard or to supply consulting information. Any changes to the standard are made only through revisions or supplements to the standard. See the  IEEE Standards Interpretations page on the IEEE Standards Association web site for the details on submitting requests for interpretation.

IEEE-1588 interpretations can only be issued after a vote of an IEEE designated committee. These interpretations are available from the IEEE Standards Association.

As a courtesy to implementers, the transcripts of official IEEE-1588 interpretations will be maintained here.

 

Patents: 

Implementers should note the 'Patent notice' on page iii of the standard indicating that letters of assurance have been filed with respect to this standard. Information about this filing and the patent policy of the IEEE may be found on the IEEE-SA Standards Board web site.
